Meeting with the Ocean

“These monks are so fascinating in their red dresses! Lets go and meet the Dalai Lama”
I said to my wife while holidaying at Mcleodganj, Dharamsala.sometime in the summer of 1986.
How? She asked.
I don’t know, but we will, I know, we ARE in Dharamsala for a start..:)
So saying , I simply alighted from my car and began making enquiries from a group of monks,
“ excuse me, I want to meet the Dalai Lama”
You want to meet who?
The Dalai Lama
The shook their heads in wonder, and which looked like a “No”. Clearly I was stranger than most tourists they were used to. Something told me this was not going to be as easy as Tintin in Tibet.
Then, a senior Lama, who perceived the intent even in my childish approach, said
“ You should go to the foreign affairs ministry at Mortimer hall, and register yourself”

Mr Dharamvir Rewari, a man I had never met, responded with the compassion of an old associate.
Picking up the archetypal black Government office telephone, “ Yes I know His Holiness is not giving any more appointments, I know he has a cold….but.. this is a very nice couple and I just thought….” He pleaded with the Secretaries of Thekchen choeling , His Holiness’s Office.
Then, looking at me with that “you know I have given it my best shot” he said
“ Mr Gulhati, you now only have to wait for His Holiness to ask to see you, its solely His decision, and if it happens in the next three days you are here, consider yourself very lucky”
Those next three days went by quickly, as good holidays do, we were having fun, yes, but there was no word from His Holiness.
“Looks like we aren’t going to meet him after all” I said to my wife, as I forked into a steaming Tibetan noodle soup.
The first coincidence:
It was exactly five seconds later that an excited man came fumbling into the café
“ Mr Gulhati we have been looking all over Mcleodganj for you. His Holiness has been waiting for half an hour, yours is the only audience left for today”
We darted out without paying the café owner, who gave a wide ‘go ahead ‘smile,
We yelled something about promising to come back to settle accounts..

The security cleared us expediently, smiling ‘you are a bit late”
They ushered us to his humble but very neat meeting hall, where we saw The Dalai Lama with a huge beaming smile that is his Hallmark .
He was Radiant. Simply beautiful.
We , didn’t know that we ought to have carried Khatas, Tibetan scarves to present him with, but He knew His protocol too well, and ,fondly put silk scarves on us in welcome.
We sat down four an hour long audience, during which I asked many questions, like the one if an operation is needed to activate the third eye..which He replied with the ease and authority of the paramount attainment that He is, but also, always joking and laughing to rub the point in permanently. (http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=107208668196)
A wonderful cup of tea was served, and then we asked if we could photograph with Him.
He obliged, and just when I was thinking about the reliability of my old camera, He instructed the secretary something crisp in Tibetan, looking at me benevolently and translating “ I told him to take another click.. uh .. maybe..photo don’t come huh ”
I understood this to be coincidence, but well was it weird or just my mind..

Then he asked for some books to be presented to us, numbering five in total, including the latest ones written by Him, and His favourite verses from shantideva. The only mystery about the altruism was this:
they were exactly the five books I had window shopped to buy just before my departure the next day.
Knowing that something good was happening, I still wanted more! And found myself now hoping he would autograph one of them, and though I didn’t see Him doing that, He had already thought of that one too: as we found out a few minutes later back in our hotel. “Tenzin Gyatso” A name I was beginning to love.
But I am not making Him out to be a Miracle man. That would amount to reducing the enigma of that sunny beam. Its just that when you’re with Him, things happen.:)

Consider the best one:
When, finally it dawned on me, that we had been treated very well, when just an hour ago we didn’t know how to even meet the Man, I asked in the most simple words “ your Holiness, you have treated us very well”
Yes, He beamed
‘but you don’t even know me, so why?” There, out of My worldly habit, I did drop a mundane doubt….

Absolutely spontaneously he laughed again ‘Ha ha ha uh you and I are old friends, you forget, I remember”

Spiritual Travel Guides

"God has a funny hide and seek game. We are told that He is everywhere, but, we never get to see Him. We are told also, that He dwells within us, and, we find this impossible to believe. When we tire of looking for Him everywhere, and make a last effort to see Him in us, he surprises us, during the act of meditation. Slowly, we begin to realise that it is true. He does dwell in us, there is a way to meet Him. Once, you are sure of His identity in you, as Antaryami, you could not ask for more, but he begins to show you His presence everywhere. You realise, that He will always be at your side. Now that you have made ‘contact’ the flight of God has just begun". Said the Yogi.

"Much like an ancient air ship, where, you only had to propel the propeller!!", exclaimed the snake.

"You compare God to a flight, an airship"' smiled the yogi, "how do you compare the Guru?"

"A good Guru is like a good travel agent then", laughed the snake; "he puts you on the right flight, and ensures your comfortable journey to the right destination."

"Yes, sometimes he even gets you upgraded, through his effort, spiritual transference, and you are allowed double baggage, extra care, and other aviation perks .."
On that note, remember, smiled the Yogi, the mind itself is your passport document:stamp it with the Visas to great realms, and enjoy the travel..

At The Turning

It is difficult ,
yes
this moving from the love of the master
to the mastery of your Self,
He smiled

Difficult?
this is the letting go of breeze
for what you call a stillness deep,

He smiled again,
yet
the one is a love that holds,
the other, a love that frees.

The Fountainhead

Like a fountain
that springs
like a rush
of joy
like a child, yes,
He Plays!!!
spilling over the catchment
of Primal Oneness:
Make way
and
AUM
A Universe
is toy,
Namah Shivaye..

Avatar

When you do arrive,
will I be a step behind?
Is it something with my invocation,
or simply,
that you set the time?
And
when my salutation and rituals
are done,
will you say again,
“It is your arrival, for which,
I have come”.

Mukti

Sometimes,
I get that feel,
that quiet thrill, that…. boundless joy,
and I have noticed,
its the time, when
I, am, with I .
Boundless,
needs no reason,
it always is!
Life,is just the season!
sometimes,
I take the trip.

Yeah, cool ! i guess..

So then,
whats the inner party like?
i asked, instantly getting the feeling that there was more
from where her beauty came.
'When you know that there's nothing 'apart' from God,'
she smiled ,now looking unmistakably divine,
'a happiness ensues,
in solitude
and with the crowds.
some call it heaven, some a state of being,
but yes, its the inner party like you said.'

Yeah cool, i guess.

Party

Party.
People
ladies gents nerds
children bullies stuffed birds.
Character
shy ruthless obscene
moronic coercive mean.
Expectation
leg-pulling victims fun
boredom yawns pun
Conversation
revengeful intellectual erratic
domestic political numismatic
Accompaniments
food drink dance
music laughter chance.

Zen

Can you
fly
in a plane
that has no wing?
Zen
is the art of arrival
to a place
where you have always been.

Just Art fun

When faced with an abstract
the one thing that seemed obvious was that it was beautiful
and the other, yes, he could identify the moon.
Is this like a zen painting then,
he asked, where expanse is hinted by diminishing the size of a known?
She smiled, its just art for fun.
and in that, he got God's play,
again.

In a Sunday suit

We are told you're everywhere,
so
how come, we never get to see you?
i asked of God, looking to the sky.

Oh..hmmm. i see, He said, looking very concerned,
uh ..do you think its maybe something to do with what i wear,
you didnt know i'm always mostly in a sunday suit....?

God's laws

Gods laws work in the most mysterious ways;

Free of his will, we create bondage,

bound to him,we find ourselves free!

A certain dignity

There is a certain dignity rooted so deep, which is seen
only when
The tree of old steps aside to make way for the roads of time.

We took a lover's leap

Ah yes, said the Gypsy God
                                                          we always had each other
                                                          much before
                                                         we took a lover's leap
                                                         into the world of time.

Ascension

Now that i bought the new car,
acquired a bungalow,
i felt great
but the man in the corner of the street,he smiled
only at the first chakra.
Now that i married a beautiful woman,
i had a wife! and it was fun!
but the man at the corner of the street,he smiled,
only at the second chakra.
Now that i won the election,
i'm the mayor, dammit !!
but the man at the corner of the street, he smiled,
you are seated in the third.
Now that i turned to poetry, i feel it,
but the man in the corner of the street, he smiled,
you know the heart.
Now that i speak it well, i am good,
but the man at the corner of the street, he smiled,
you have found your speaking chord.
Now that i meditate, i know, at my brow!
but the man at the corner of the street, he smiled,
what do you know?
Now i rose, to the seventh, the highest high,
and the man at the corner of the street,
came centre stage
and he, was i.

Lost on a mosaic floor

A stream of ants
following one another
in routine
aimlessness.
One lonely ant
lost
on a mosaic floor
purposefully.

Eye of God

Suns take a rest, He said,
but the eye of God
never sets.

An ancient pride

Ancient pride
silent stands;
my loud gasps echo....

Above the wall

Above the wall
sun rests....
crown in sky..

Fourth January

birthday morning...
welcome mists..
our window smiles...

One day my mirror spoke up

One day my mirror spoke up
do you still need to know
Why God created the Universe?

My Guru's disguises

Ever since he bought the kit, My Guru is into disguises.
On the Guru Poornima night itself,
nobody could find him in his room,
he hid in the sky with the help of the banana tree leaf:
ah, but what could he do about his resplendence?

The portrait

They tell me i am old now
and my wrinkles resemble
those of the man in the antique portrait.
They leave me to myself, and i am glad .
As i light my pipe,
i look up to the man,
i do not know who he is
but remember my grandfather's awe
of even the picture.
There is another smoke from across the hills,
i am not really that old,
but am beginning to forget
whose hills are those,
in all these discussions
of mine and yours.
Those, were the times
grandfather would say,
when anyone came,
the god in us arose,
to greet ,the god in them.
I see clearly, the two smokes merging now
soon the pipe will be done, i smile,
my grandson, when a portrait of me is all he has,
will he be able to see those times
once again?

Vision

Here, take my glasses,
said the elder,
the alphabet is small,
they will help you read better.
Aah! you can always tell this time of year,
I saw he was not interested in the paper,
and looked to the sky instead,
the siberian cranes are here!
You have an interest in birds? i asked

Expanse,
he said,
it carries freedom.

We should be giving you expanse,
who says you cannot fly?
we should be teaching you of flight.
Who says mankind has no wing?
by spreading ours,
we could show,
that you, were born with it.

And in the play...

I spent
my time
tracing
the untraceable player
and in the play
did myself disappear.

Then woke from the disappearing dream
to see
the dance
was everywhere.

How strange it is!

How strange it is

that a morning mist

it was ,that finally revealed

God’s game of obscuring:

A little veil adds great beauty.

We look for Evidence..

We look for evidence of God in small miracles,
taking for granted the rising of the sun to make a day,
the rising of the moon to make night,
and all those stars, winking at us to let us know we are not alone..

God's Party

God's party doesnt have second hand invites.
You are already here. look around , and enjoy.:)
